To preserve and improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental well being of Inner South Canberra and the Inner South Canberra Community.

Chairman’s column, September 2015

The Inner South Canberra Community Council is delighted that substantial progress has been made in resolving the issues created by the proposed relocation of the Canberra Services Club and the Manuka Occasional Childcare Centre, which had distressed the local community.

We appreciate the efforts made by local MLAs Steve Doszpot and Shane Rattenbury in pushing for a sensible resolution to the problems that would have been created by the landswap. But the devil is in the detail and the ISCCC will be working with the Telopea Park School, MOCCA and other stakeholders to ensure their interests are protected in implementing the agreed arrangements.

Another priority of the ISCCC is ensuring the interests of public housing tenants are protected in the forthcoming redevelopment of public housing sites in Griffith, Narrabundah and Red Hill. It is important that people with longstanding connections to a particular neighbourhood are not forced to move far afield. We look forward to working with the Government on this important issue.

We have also raised with the Government our concerns that financial imperatives are behind unrealistic population densities proposed for the new privately developed complexes to be built on these sites. You can see our submission on our website at www.isccc.org.au
