For better or worse, we now know the addresses of all the 1,022 Canberra homes affected by the Mr Fluffy debacle. 68 of these homes are in the Inner South, with as many as 20 in Narrabundah, 15 in Yarralumla and 11 in Griffith.
Understandably, there is much anxiety in the community about issues associated with these homes. The Inner South Canberra Community Council will be holding a public forum on residential asbestos at 7pm on Thursday 9 July at the Eastlake Club, 3 Oxley street, Griffith: see our website at www.isccc.org.au
Andrew Kefford, head of the Asbestos Response Taskforce, will speak on plans for the affected homes and neighbourhoods. I encourage you to attend the forum and put your questions.
There has been much debate recently about the need for an appropriate balance between heritage and development in our suburbs. I feel it is high time we recognised the contribution played by our local residents groups in fighting to ensure we leave something of value for future generations.

It is a battle that goes on every day. As I write this column, the Old Narrabundah Community Council is working to save from demolition a series of delightful duplexes in Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah, which have for six decades added character to this part of old Canberra. The Canberra planning system is costly and time consuming and ONCC would appreciate your financial assistance to help fund its ACAT appeal.
The ISCCC and Griffith-Narrabundah Community Association is working with the Government on finding a new permanent site for the MOCCA childcare centre, so that Telopea Park school can keep its tennis courts and MOCCA can continue to serve the inner south when it loses access to its current site in Manuka. One option is Blocks 33 and 39 behind the Griffith shops and GNCA would value your opinion on its viability.
